Traditionally, performance in soccer has been measured with a focus on outcome, goals and results, while important aspects of individual development such as technique, decision-making and tactical awareness often get overlooked.

Quality of Play is a new concept, developed by the MLS and Taka, that evaluates performance in a way that is agnostic of playing style. The quality of gameplay actions are assessed by an experienced team of analysts.

For each game, Taka’s models use the location, description, and quality of every significant player action to calculate attacking, defensive, and overall scores for each team

The scores are adjusted for quality of opposition, before being aggregated across the season for each team

Standings for U13 & U14 based on Quality of Play are published on the MLS NEXT platform, providing an alternative view of performance that measures more than simply goals and results.
