Los Angeles Football Club Forward Carlos Vela Voted MLS Player of the Week

– Los Angeles Football Club forward Carlos Vela was voted the Major League Soccer Player of the Week for the 18
th
week of the 2019 MLS season. This is Vela’s third Player of the Week honor this season, previously winning the award for his performance in the second and fifth week of play.
LAFC defeated Vancouver Whitecaps FC 6-1 on Saturday behind a dominant performance from Vela who finished with two goals and an assist. Vela leads the league with 19 goals scored this season while also topping MLS with 12 assists. LAFC sits atop the league standings with 43 points (13-2-4 overall record).
The Mexico National Team veteran helped to give LAFC a 2-1 lead in 41

minute when placing a corner kick to the far side of the box, resulting in a close range Adama Diomande header (

Vela then scored his first goal of the match to extend LAFC’s lead to 4-1 in the 54

minute, dribbling into the center of the box and finishing with a left-footed strike into the net (

). The 2019 MLS All-Star completed his brace in the 69

minute to push LAFC to a 5-1 advantage. With his back to the goal, Vela boxed out a defender to recover a deflected goalkeeper save, finishing with a header from close range (

LAFC returns to regular season action on Friday, July 12 when traveling to face the Houston Dynamo at BBVA Stadium (9 p.m. ET, UniMás / Twitter).
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season through both media and fan voting in a process conducted by MLS Communications. A panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) comprises 75 percent of the vote, while a Twitter fan vote represents the remaining 25 percent of voting. NASR consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
